Cheerios 100,000 Book Giveaway Promotion
I’ve always enjoyed reading as a kid, and now my kid enjoys reading. Whenever I have a chance to help out I do, recently I was able to donate quite a few books to my sons class and school.
Cheerios is doing a great promotion where they are giving away 100,000 books! Cheerios has teamed up, First Book and Jon Scieszka, to deliver 100,000 books to community-based programs serving children in need. The five states with the highest number of votes will receive 20,000 new books.
By answering trivia questions based on the books, you can cast a vote per correct answer for your state. Click here to start answering questions and casting your votes.
The Books
I received a gift pack of 5 books to check out and review for the promotion. Not only are they really cute books, better yet, they are bilingual. The authors have found a great way to incorporate both languages, the story told both in Spanish and English.
My son already found a favorite and we’ve read it a dozen times!
For those who can’t afford to donate this year, and have no time to volunteer this is a great cause to participate in and it will only take a few minutes of your time to answer some questions and vote for your state of choice.

I live in Sweet Home Alabama. According to a 2003 study, 15% of Alabamians lacked basic reading skills. These books would help our state combat this rate.
I think my state, Maryland should receive 20,000 books because we have too many children in the Schools and not enough resources for them. Their needs are not being met especially in the inner city Schools. Thanks for the chance to win!!
I THINK MY STATE SHOULD RECEIVE THE BOOKS BECAUSE THERE ARE SO MANY UNDER PRIVILEDGED KIDS IN FAMILIES WITH HARDLY ANY INCOME..
well i think mo needs the books because they r so low in scool on reading because there is not alot of them now and it would help the kids read more and i luv mo my kids luv to read and it would be wounderfull for them to be able to find a book they like…thanks
I Think my state Michigan should get the books because michigan had had one of the toughest few years and people can not afford to much here.
Ilive in NY, just east of the city. Barely one-third of public school students performed at grade level on the 2001 English Language Arts exams, according to the NYC Department of Education. The Mayors Office has estimated that 1.5 million to 2 million city residents need literacy services. Fewer than 60,000 are receiving them. Just think how much we could do with these books!
While I feel that every state probably deserves 20,000 books, it’s scary to think that 13% of Pennsylvanians would be unable to read what I am typing. Although it doesn’t have the highest illiteracy rate, the thought that even ONE person in Pennsylvania would not be able to read this web-page and our comments is sad. So, I have to say, “Bring those books to PA!” Books are the tools necessary for reading…and Pennsylvania can certainly use them!
If I win, I will be donating my five books to our public library. They are always so thankful for donations. I am sure they can use the extra “tools.”
Every state needs books no doubt. Kentucky is no different. I would luv to win 5 books that I could give to some children who are not getting anything for Christmas.
i think my state should win because the shape is somewhat like a book itself.
last year i spent several months in a domestic violence shelter & got to see some real needy children up close & personal…it’s sad to see children neglected without books or simple luxuries…so that’s why i’m trying to get good ole pennsylvania to win those books …i wanna see some of those kids get some really cool books so they too can see how much fun reading can really be!
Our state is in huge financial trouble, so I hope Arizona wins. With so many cuts in the educational budget, and such a huge number of teachers laid off this schoolyear, it would be nice to see the kids receive SOME kind of benefit or advantage. Many struggle with learning English so they can make it here in America, and I think getting them reading early is a great way to help them.
Tennessee should receive the books because 52% of Tennesseeans are in the lowest two tiers of literacy. More access to books means more opportunities to read.
Seeing that everything in Connecticut is more expensive here we could use a boost to our state. Funding has been cut, unemployment highest ever and so many companies pulling out of state. This would be a wonderful way we could all benefit.
I will be voting for PA! Every state has its literacy issues. But we are a big state and I think we need them the most!
If I win, I will donate them to the local soup kitchen, that also takes other donations that they give to the local fmailies in need. I donate items there about once a month.
THANKS!!
I live in Texas and I think my state needs the books because we have the largest amount of uninsured children in my state and maybe if they read the books they can at least mentally escape to a better place…My states is also either the fastest growing or one of the fastest growing in the nation, it’d be a nice way to welcome kids to the area.
I used to work in the English department of a large Texas school district. Good, interesting books are needed to get students interested in reading for life.
I think RI should get the books. We have one of the highest unemployment rates in the country. Kids shouldn’t have to go without books!
Everyone has great answers and I know it’s going to be hard to choose. California has so many children in overcrowded schools, that these children are failing terribly. I personally have seen kids in my daughter’s 1st grade class who cannot read very well due to lack of education at school and at home. Most children are growing up trying to learn the English language but can’t due to lack of educational resources. What hurts the worse is that this Beautiful State is So Expensive to live in, no wonder why kids are going without Books, a very sad situation that these children are failing because we are trying to make ends meet just putting Food on the Table and clothes on their backs. God Bless America
Nebraska should win because we have a lot of corn and not much of anything else, so people get bored and books would help with the boredome. Creative enough?
Seriously though, we do have poverty and crime rate issues, particularly in Omaha. I think this prize would do a lot of good for Nebraska. I visited the site and voted a bunch of times.
Hello! My state MICHIGAN is going through a rough time. Schools are suffering. The governor just announced another cut for school funding which is about $300 per student now. We could use any help given! Thanks!

Well, seeing how CA keeps cutting their school budget, the schools here could use more books. Rather, the teachers could use a break from having to buy the books & supplies for the kids. But honestly, this situation seems to be occuring in ALL the states. Kudos to the state who gets all 10,000 books!
Reading is a very important aspect of life. Too many people watch TV. Reading ignites & flames the fires of imagination.
I am in Florida and we didn’t get the nickname flori-duh for nothing! Our poor teachers are some of the lowest paid, our school year is full of holidays and teacher work-days (a week off for Thanksgiving!!!). At least teachers wouldn’t have to foot the bill for school books as well. My kids bring home different books several times a week from the teacher’s “library.” I am sure the teacher paid for that. Just make sure and include some on hanging chads for the grown ups!
Michigan is struggling and so are their schools, shelters, food banks, churches and residents! 5,000 books could give these exactly what they need…….resources!! I work at a shelter for Domestic violence, sexual assault and child abuse and notice one of the things they ALWAYS appreciate is a good book to get their minds of the intolerable lives they have had! Whether its the Mom’s who are trying to find the resources to get out, or the children who need that extra security at night when they go to bed!
I think Forida should get the books because….well..I live here!
Also, since we are surrounded on 3 sides by water, we unfairly have less books around us as opposed to most other states that have land and therefore more libraries, book stores, trees to make paper for the books…you get my drift.
California is one of the biggest states in the U.S. As every state suffered economically, ours included, the first to go are funding for school supplies including books. It is very important to start the child early reading so that they know that there are opportunities and a bigger world out there. Reading is fundamental to growing a child’s mind and a child’s world. Hopefully, California and all the other 49 states get the books too. We all are deserving. If we all donated 1 book to our libraries or school, our future generations will be better for it!
I think Michigan should get these books as well. Michigan could always use another helping “hand”!
I believe this as they are cutting school budgets, the unemployment rates are quite high, and kids always enjoy getting new things…so why not let it be books?!
The state I am living in right now is VA. I know this area I am in mainly consists of Military families. I know this state could use 20k books for the schools within the metro cities. Kids need books and they should be given every opportunity to get them. Reading is a fundamental part of a good education. Everyone should be able to acquire it.

Every Okie in Oklahoma likes reading alot,
and the books would help out every library spot.
Young Okies, each one could curl up with a book,
and turn every page with a curious look.
They could tell all their friends about the stories they read,
And thank all the people for filling their heads,
With learning, imagination, lessons and fun
For books aren’t just for children, but for everyone.
When I was in elementary school in Ohio, my school participated in a program called Reading is Fundamental (RIF- you can visit their website at: http://www.rif.org/) where they provided books to elementary school students at no cost. Unfortunately, after moving to Indiana, I found that the schools around here do not participate in this program. Just recently, I was able to see the effect that this has on children because of my co-workers son, and the fact that they cannot afford to buy him books, while he is so desperate for them. I took money out of my own pocket, to buy books for him from his schools book fair, but just imagine how many children could benefit from my state of Indiana receiving 20,000 books! If I could afford to do it, believe me, I would…maybe then we’d be able to say there’s more than corn in Indiana!
I live in GA and there have been so many families and schools affected by the severe floods that recently hit. Many had not even gotten the help they needed from the first major flood when it happened again -only weeks later. I think the books would be very beneficial for either the schools that lost everything or families that are still suffering from the losses. -Especially with Christmas around the corner!
I think my home state should win 20,000 books because Missouri never gets any recognition for things. We have Mark Twain and Harry Truman, but in the news, it’s always California or Florida. I want Missouri to get not only some recognition, but some good books for libraries! I used to donate my old ones to libraries, and it feels good. I would love to do it on a much bigger scale!
I think that Pennsylvania should be chosen because, as with any state, there is a great number of kids here whose families are suffering through this economy….If I should win, I would like to pick some names off of the angel tree and give the books to some kids who will not be getting much for Christmas. There is nothing more valuable than a book to a child or an adult…books can take you away to another world, where there is happy endings.
WISCONSIN: Seriously, any state that thinks it’s a good idea to spend the money we don’t have on a choo-choo needs to have the opportunity to earn a better education!
Because I said so! That used to work for my mother when I asked why, so I thought I’d give it a shot here…and because I LOVE to read I want everyone else to enjoy it as well! It can take you to places you’ve never dreamed of going!
I think that CA should be chosen. There have been so many budget cuts in the schools, especially in our area, that teachers are going out to buy books and other supplies for their classrooms out of their own pockets. I know for a fact that CA teachers don’t make much (a few of my friends are local teachers). Anything that we can do to get the kids reading and get the children that will be running this country someday excited about reading, which means getting books into their hands, is the best reason of all to have California get this. Thank you.
I am sure that every state could use this very valuable gift of 20,000 books. Here in WI we really need to the books because during the cold winter months there is not a ton of things to do with you children and this would give some of the less fortunate kids an oppotunity to hopefully learn a very valuable habit.
It would be nice if every state were able to get 20,000 free books; every state has a need for books and other things to promote literacy in our young ones.
I weas blessed to have books available to me as a youngster. I was blessed to have people to read to me and to be exposed to our public library at a young age. However, I personally know children who are not so fortunate and I know there are many more in our area. And from having school aged children myself and having volunteered in elementary schools I do realize just how important it is to have elements in their lives to promote reading. Having these books donated to the state of Ohio will be step forward in promoting literacy and possibly changing the lives of some of our children.
I am originally from WV, one of the poorest states in the Country. Need I say more why they could so use these books? Thanks SO much!!
Our library budget for the state of Ohio was cut this year due to the economy. Because of this, the budget for our libraries to purchase new materials was cut back to that of 1990! For this reason, I think Ohio deserves these books!
My state, TN, has horrible resources in many of the schools, to stock the schools with books would really help!!
I live in Wisconsin. I feel that reading is an essential part of any child’s growth and development. I also feel that no matter what state wins, the kids are who will win in the end. Good luck to all the states!
My home state of Arkansas could certainly benefit from the gift of books. Many are living in poverty and are perhaps too far from the county library. One can be certain the children of my home state would be so very grateful for such a lovely gift.
I live in Iowa and we should receive them because there is a great need for educational resources here.
Reading is Fun! That’s why the state of TN should receive this wonderful gift.-Thanks
California seems to be cheaping out on education now. Many of our schools have had to cut down on school activities and funds. The children don’t get as much as they could a few years ago. California deserves these lovely books! Thanks!
In Montana (where I live permanently) it is cold in the winter and gets dark very early….great scenario for reading a book by the fireplace with a cup of hot cocoa
Did I mention the 17% unemployment in our county? Not much money around for parents, schools, and libraries to buy books for the kids!
My daughter isn’t even receiving some books as they have apparently been cut out of the budget. She can view them online. I would imagine the elementary schools aren’t getting as many books as they used to. I think any school could benefit from this great opportunity. Thank you so much for having this wonderful contest.
My state of Arizona should receive the 20,000 books because in the summer we’re stuck inside most of the day because of the wickedly hot temperatures. Why not sit down with a good book while sitting by the freezer to stay cool!
I live in florada and dunt think that florada needs books at all evryonee in flurida is verry smart and we spend lots of tim in skool and stuf alredy my mom buys me bookz sumtimes and i uze them to hold up my kichen tabel cuz its mising a leg i think my dawg ated it neways floruda iz ful of peple hoo dunt need need stoopid boks so give em too sumone who reely needz them like misissipi
Highlands Middle School is located east of the Cascade Mountains in Washington State. Our student body is predominately diverse. A majority of our students come from non-English speaking families. Bilingual books would be a dream come true to help support our Spanish, Chinese, Bosnian, and Jordanian students. Our library does not consist of any bilingual books.
My state (MN) should win because we have a lot of kids in need. We used to be known as a state with a great educational system, but that hasn’t been the case in the last number of years. We need to improve that!
I think PA needs these books because budget cuts have closed down quite a few local libraries over the last few years. Thanks!
I teach in NC. Our state needs the books because we can barely afford light bulbs and toilet papers!
I think my state should get them to encourage children to read, and encourage parents to read to and with their children. My parents ALWAYS read to me, with me, and helped me pick out my own books when I was a kid and it DEFINITELY has had a positive effect. And for those same reason, all the states deserve the books!
It takes one book for a child- the right book, to strike that child’s interest in reading for the rest of his/her life. The more books available to children, the better chance they have of finding that “one” that helps them fall in love with the wonderful world of reading. ALL children need books, I happen to live in AL right now, so if I win, those AL children will benefit, but I wish we could afford to find and give every child THAT book.
Okay, so the reason that Florida should get the books is because, hello (!), it’s Florida. The land of mixed-up elections, rednecks and the Tiger Woods scandal! If we don’t have books for our kids, to teach them to be amazing people, the gene-pool down here is in trouble!! Books are perfect ways to escape the craziness that runs the entire length of our state!
I swear books changed me! And I’m making sure they change my child. I definitely don’t want a redneck child barefoot in my front yard!!
Was that creative enough??
But Florida should win, b/c you know… see the reason above.

I believe NY needs 20,000 books because we have one of the largest immigrant population in the country – and books are a huge gateway to learning how to speak english – you can’t get through you’re day without reading something! So I believe 20,000 books would be great for that reason
Thanks!
I’m from Illinois, and we have a huge, HUGE budget crisis. The state has cut funding to many areas, most horribly, to the Bright Futures preschool programs. Some are cutting just transportation, hours, or teachers, but many have cut ALL preschool funding entirely, leaving thousands of children (whose parents can’t afford preschool) with absolutely NO school to go to!
I think KS should win because it seems like the kids are out of school as much as they are in school these days–extra books to read during those days off would help!
Iowa should win because there isn’t very much else to do but read
Just kidding- but there a ton of great charities that I’d love to donate that many books to.
Like the majority of our states, our state has been hit by the economy. Our state, as a result, has cut funding to public libraries. Sadly, it isn’t the first time that books were sacrificed to balance the Virginia budget. Our state, according to the National Center for Poverty, has 1,063,313 children(1). Over 250,000 of these children live in poverty. When I was growing up books were my friends. Through them I could go anywhere, do anything or be anything. It saddens me that the children I cite above might not have the same opportunity to read a book and escape some of the harsh realities surrounding them for an hour or two or learn about something they love and might someday be passionate about because of funding cuts and their families inability to afford the luxury of a great book. Douglas Jerrold once said, “A blessed companion is a book, – a book that, fitly chosen, is a lifelong friend,… a book that, at a touch, pours its heart into our own.” In our most trying times, what our children could use are friends that nourish their hearts, reach their minds and touch their souls. This gift from Cheerios would do that for the children of Virginia.

Michigan is struggling and so are their schools, shelters, food banks, churches and residents! 5,000 books could give these exactly what they need…….resources!! Whether its the Mom’s who are trying to find the resources to get out, or the children who need that extra security at night when they go to bed!
I live in Oakland County, Michigan, once considered one of the wealthiest counties on the US. With the economy sliding, our County and subsequently our schools, are sliding. Funding is being cut for activites and the children are the ones who suffer in the end. To win these books would be a great boost to the spirits of our children.
I live in KS and there have been lots of budget cuts..I would donate the books to to my mom’s school Kansas State School for the Blind, my son’s preschool and the Catholic School he would attend later and to all the other schools that are in need in our area.
I think that my state Oregon should win the 20,000 books becuase after doing some research I found that Oregon children spend 43 minutes a week reading, that includes class time and homework!!!! If that is not awful!!!! One of Oregon greatest things and biggest pitfall is we are mostly forest and protected wilderness. That means that we Oregonians are spread out very far. And most small rural citys and towns don’t have the resources of even a library yet alone a bookstore. We need these books!

Send us those books to AR, i am lucky enough to be around children everyday!!!! I work at school, and as we all know children learn thorugh thier enviroment, so send those books to us. My school alone we have over a 63% hispanic population, non-english speaking, and they learn through reading!!!, being read to, reading themselves!!! SO READ to your kids!!! Let them read to you!!!!
Hawaii is A melting pot of all cultures so we should definitely get some books. Some people
need to learn English.
I am a teaching assistant in a lower-division history class at a college in Tennessee. Most of the students graduated from high schools in Tennessee. It alarms me to see how difficult it is for these students to write. Our schools, as well as schools throughout the country, definitely need to improve literacy rates. Reading is a vital skill!
I think my state could use the books because of cuts in public library funding. If i get books from this little contest I will donate them to my local library in hopes to make up for the books that i destroyed (unintentionally) as a child. It would be a relief to not be heckled by my elementary librarian about a 3,000 dollar late fee dating back to 1991 for a book called “The Celery Stalks At Midnight”. (That was a joke by the way. But seriously, I do owe that lady money) Regardless whoever wins this, we all win. Because the kids will be reading. It is one of the most important and crucial things that our communities and companies can do is to give the kids books and encouragement to pursue knowledge.
I think Ohio should recieve the books. OH children are suffering this year due to the high rates of unemployment and the economic crisis in our region. Children who discover the joy and adventure of reading are more likely to value education and aspire to greatness. The children are our future, let’s provide them with the gift of literacy.
I live in NC. We are #2 in hogs, but 42nd in education. We need books..lol!
